For whom could a vasectomy be of interest?

Most men who decide on a vasectomy have usually been married for more than 10 years.

The decision in favor of vasectomy is usually made following a fundamental information and discussion session, and in conversation with the partner / wife.

Vasectomy is considered to be a very effective kind of contraception.

It is to be considered above all when:

  • the married couple decides jointly that they do not want to have more children
  • if no other kind of contraception should be used in the marriage
  • if on grounds of the health situation of the wife, pregnancy is not an option and a safe and effective contraception method is wanted.

A vasectomy is not to be recommended under the following conditions (selection):

  • if is not quite clear yet whether, in the aftermath, there might still be a desire for children
  • if the marriage is under strain or the decision for vasectomy is merely a compromise
  • if merely one partner desires vasectomy and has put the other partner under pressure with it
  • when a man is still rather young and/ or up to now has married not once but frequently
  • Men who are not married or who are divorced.

For the case that the possibility to have a child should be preserved also after the vasectomy has been performed, sperms can be frozen in special labs. Then these can be used for insemination later on.

Basically, the partners need to have a conversation about the long-term effects of a vasectomy and they should be clear about what this means. The specialist for vasectomy will see you for a personal consultation and, in the ensuing conversation, will points out to you all the important information that you should know.
